Ace Combat Advance (USA Europe)

Ace Combat Advance (USA Europe) is the first handheld entry in Namco’s iconic Ace Combat combat flight series, released globally for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2005 by Namco Hometek. Developed exclusively for GBA hardware, the game adapts the series’ core aerial combat action for the portable console, shifting from the 3D first-person gameplay of console entries to a tilted top-down perspective that works seamlessly with GBA’s limited processing power. The game’s campaign follows you as a fighter pilot in the United Nations air force, tasked with dismantling the aggressive ultranationalist terrorist group the Ultraviolet Organization, which has seized control of multiple international territories and threatens global stability. Across 12 distinct story missions, you’ll take on a mix of objectives: intercept enemy fighter squadrons, destroy ground bases and naval fleets, take out high-value target boss aircraft, and provide cover for allied ground forces. Game Guide

Mastering Ace Combat Advance on GBA starts with getting familiar with the portable control scheme: use the D-pad to maneuver your jet, the A button to fire your infinite primary machine guns, B button to deploy limited special weapons like missiles, bombs, and rockets, and L/R buttons to adjust your flight speed, a critical mechanic many new players overlook. For early campaign missions, prioritize completing the primary objective over chasing every enemy fighter: most missions have a strict time limit, and wasting time on random skirmishes will often leave you failing the mission even if you shoot down dozens of planes. When choosing your fighter jet, match your plane to the mission: pick light, highly maneuverable fighters for air-to-air intercept missions, as they can outturn enemy jets and avoid missile lock easier. For ground attack or anti-ship missions, bring a heavier jet with a larger special weapon capacity to take out multiple fortified targets. If you see a missile lock warning alert pop up on your HUD, immediately turn 90 degrees and drop your altitude to get behind terrain or buildings to break the missile’s tracking, this simple trick will save you from dozens of unnecessary deaths. For boss fights, save all your special weapons for the boss’s weak point: most boss aircraft have a visible vulnerable engine or weapons bay that takes 3x extra damage, so don’t waste your missiles on generic armor plating. If you’re playing the USA Europe version, you can unlock a hidden bonus F-22 Raptor jet by completing all campaign missions with an S rank, which has the best all-around stats of any plane in the game. Always keep an eye on your special weapon count: don’t spam missiles at small enemy fighters, save them for high-value targets and bosses to avoid running out mid-mission.
