Avengers In Galactic Storm (Japan)

Released in 1995 by Data East under official Marvel license, Avengers In Galactic Storm (Japan) is a cult classic 2D tag-team fighting game developed exclusively for arcade platforms. Built around the iconic Marvel Comics "Kree-Skrull War" storyline, this Japanese regional version features exclusive tweaks not found in the international release, including localized Japanese voice acting for all playable characters, adjusted hitbox balancing, and slightly faster combo pacing tailored to Japanese arcade hall player preferences. Players can choose from 12 playable characters spanning the Avengers roster and their intergalactic foes, including Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, Ronan the Accuser, and Super-Skrull. The game’s signature Galactic Storm meter lets players unlock devastating team super moves when filled, while its responsive tag system allows mid-combat character swaps with optional assist attacks to catch opponents off guard. Game Guide

Mastering Avengers In Galactic Storm (Japan) starts with learning its core tag-team mechanics first, as proper character swapping is far more impactful than individual combos in this regional version thanks to its reduced swap cooldown. The game uses a standard 8-way joystick and four-button control layout (light punch, heavy punch, light kick, heavy kick): press heavy punch and heavy kick at the same time to swap between your two selected characters, and hold the input while moving toward your opponent to trigger a quick assist attack that can interrupt enemy combos. You will build your Galactic Storm meter by landing attacks or taking damage, and once full, you can trigger a character-specific super move by inputting down, down-forward, forward + both punch buttons, or a full team super move by inputting the same command while holding the heavy kick button instead. For new players, we recommend starting with the Captain America + Iron Man team combination: Captain America’s basic 3-hit punch combo is easy to land, and his shield projectile can reflect most enemy ranged attacks, while Iron Man’s flying kick special (input forward, down, down-forward + kick) lets you pressure opponents from unexpected angles. When facing the final boss Ronan the Accuser, use your tag swap’s brief invincibility frame to dodge his unblockable spear charge attack, then land a quick combo before he recovers. Note that the Japanese version’s reduced hit stun means you will need to time your combo inputs 2-3 frames faster than the international release, so practice chaining light attacks into heavy attacks before you attempt longer combos in competitive play. For single-player runs, save at least one full Galactic Storm bar for the final boss fight, as you will need the extra damage to take down Ronan before he depletes your combined team health.
