Kunio Kun Nekketsu Collection 2 (Japan)

Kunio Kun Nekketsu Collection 2 is a 2005 Game Boy Advance (GBA) compilation released exclusively in Japan by Arc System Works, created to celebrate the legacy of the beloved Kunio-kun (Nekketsu) franchise originally developed by Technos Japan. After Technos ceased operations in the 1990s, Arc System Works acquired the full intellectual property rights to the entire Kunio-kun series, and launched this two-part collection of classic franchise titles for the popular portable GBA hardware. Collection 2 compiles several fan-favorite entries from the franchise, including iconic early beat 'em up and arcade-style sports titles that defined the series' signature over-the-top, lighthearted, chaotic gameplay style. Unlike many retro compilations of the era that altered original content, this release stays fully faithful to the core gameplay of each included title, only making minor adjustments to adapt controls to the GBA's button layout and adding quality-of-life features that were not availab

Game Guide

Whether you are a long-time Kunio-kun fan revisiting this collection or new to the Nekketsu series, these tips will help you get the most out of your GBA playthrough. First, spend a few minutes getting comfortable with the GBA control layout: the original NES games used two core action buttons, so the GBA's A and B buttons map perfectly to punches and kicks, while the shoulder buttons can be remapped for quick item switching in beat 'em up entries to fit your playstyle. For the beat 'em up titles included in this collection, always prioritize moving through levels slowly instead of rushing toward the exit. Most Kunio-kun beat 'em ups reward you for defeating every enemy on screen, as enemies drop gold, healing items, and rare power-ups that you will need to survive tough late-game boss fights. In the fan-favorite story-driven beat 'em up Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari included in this release, do not skip through in-game NPC dialogue: many characters give critical hints about hidden shops and secret areas that let you unlock stronger gear and power up your character long before you reach the final boss encounter. For the sports titles like the iconic Nekketsu soccer game included here, remember that each character has a unique special move triggered by holding the B button and pressing a direction once your power meter is full. Special shots are far more likely to beat the opposing goalie, so save your full meter for high-impact scoring chances. Always take advantage of the compilation's built-in save system: unlike the original 8-bit releases that only had limited or no save support, this GBA port lets you save your progress at any point, so you can save before a tough boss fight or pick up your playthrough anywhere. To unlock the hidden alternate version of Kunio, complete the main story mode of every title included in the collection: this secret character has boosted attack and speed stats that make even the hardest encounters much more manageable.
